Park Rapids has more than just great fishing!

Park Rapids has been a traveling angler’s paradise for a very long time, but there is so much more to enjoy in the area.

Park Rapids is host to Legends and Logging Days and we had a record attendance this year. Smokey Hills Outdoor Store had it’s second annual Ye Old Archery Competition which had 525 registered participants.  They also feature chainsaw carving and professional logging competitions. This event is held just south of Park Rapids off of county road 6.

Late summer is the best time to go berry picking and the Park Rapids area is ripe for the picking. Some of the berries that get the most attention such as blueberries and raspberries are beginning to fade for the season. Chokecherries, serviceberries, blackberries, elderberries, gooseberries, wild grapes and many more fruits are right here in our backyards. Many of the berries we walk by everyday are eatable. Buy the book “Wild Berries & Fruits Field Guide” by Teresa Malone to easily identify any berry in Minnesota. The book is available on Kindle.

2nd Street Stage is a community sponsored event that features live music every Thursday night during the summer through August 25th. Smokey Hills Outdoor Store was last week’s main sponsor and released over 100 SHOS beach balls throughout the crowd as well as gave away prizes. A beer tent, snack bar and face painting booth are all part of the get together. Admission is free! The event begins at 5pm next week (as opposed to 6pm) and is over around 8:30pm. Located on 2nd Street in Park Rapids.

We also have some great restaurants! Here’s a few that we recommend:

Necces Italiano Restaurante
Fine dining located on Main Street in Park Rapids with some of the best food in the state. They have fresh fish flown in and their chefs have went to Italy to research the food. The restaurant has been featured on a cooking show on the Food Network and is rated the #1 restaurant in Park Rapids on TripAdvisor®.Located on Main Street in Park Rapids. Phone # 218-237-4625 Owned by Denise Jokela

Iron Horse Bar & Grill
Great atmosphere with Minnesota sports memorabilia on the walls, rustic cabin look with TVs in the corners. It is very well known for it’s beef brisket and friendly staff, don’t miss out! Located in downtown Nevis, MN. Phone # 218-652-3898 Owned by Nate Ott & Shaun Dudley

Zhateau Zorbaz Park Rapids
Where’s the nightlife in the P.R. area? The answer is Zhateau Zorbaz! This local restaurant always has something going on from fantasy football leagues to free magic shows for the kids. Mexican food is served in a very inviting & bright area. They have an arcade for the kids as well as a pool table, shuffle board and golf for the adults. This is a family oriented fun spot until 9 or 10 pm when the dance floor opens up and a DJ plays current dance music. Located just north of Dorset on beautiful Little Sand Lake. Phone # 218-237-1969 Owned by Robb Swanson

Also check out the Good Life Cafe, West Forty, The Y Steak house to name a few. A great list of the eateries in the area can be found at!

Park Rapids Fishing Report 8/21/16 to 8/27/16
Walleye – On the transition from summer to fall, the walleyes will be more scattered throughout the water column. Mostly looking for that 18’-22’ on quick dropping bars, shelves, and flats. This gives the walleyes a choice of either deeper feeding or shallow feeding in the weeds. Tie on a Northland “Pro Walleye Micro Blade Spinner” either tipped with a crawler or minnow for your best chance on pulling up that late summer walleye!
Northern Pike – Looking in about 12’-16’ of water for the tallest, greenest weeds this time of year. With the life cycle of most weeds ending this time of year, the greenest and tallest weeds around will be the
key on hooking that trophy Northern. Tie on an Acme “Little Cleo” in either 2/5th or 3/4th oz for fishing any depths!
Bass – Spread out anywhere from 3’-18’. Up shallow looking for the lifelike action coming from a Lunkerhunt “Combat Frog”. The deeper bass will be looking for a heavier Texas Rigged Yum “Dinger” paired with a VMC “Heavy Duty Wide Gap” hook for your best luck at hooking that big mama!
Sunfish/Crappie – On the search for the tallest and greenest weed beds around in anywhere from 12’-18’ of water. Looking out for any of the lifelike VMC “Wingding, Nymph, or Boot tail” all tipped with either a leech, crappie minnow or small piece or worm for best luck at hosting that late summer fish fry!
